A newborn baby wrapped in cloth was found dead at a rubbish disposal area of a hostel block at a higher education institution (IPT) in Kuala Langat, Selangor, at midnight.
The discovery was reported to police at about 12.20am by a local man after the baby’s body was found abandoned at the hostel’s rubbish area.
Kuala Langat District Police Chief Superintendent Akmalrizal Mohd Radzi said police have identified the suspect linked to the case.
“The suspect is a female student believed to be the baby’s mother. She is in her teenage years and has been arrested,” he said in a statement.
Police did not reveal the gender of the deceased baby, although reports indicated that the infant was believed to be a girl.
Akmalrizal said the case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Police have urged members of the public with information regarding the incident to come forward at the nearest police station or contact the Kuala Langat District Police Headquarters Operations Room at 03-31872222 to assist investigations.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
