Malaysia’s F1 Comeback Decision Rests With Government, Says Petronas

Date:

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has clarified that any decision on Malaysia potentially returning as a Formula One (F1) host will be determined by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and relevant authorities.

In a statement to Bernama, the national oil company said it was aware of reports regarding the possibility of Malaysia hosting an F1 race again this year.

Petronas said as a business entity, it would continue exploring opportunities that match its strategic and commercial goals while contributing sustainable long-term value to the country.

The statement came after Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari revealed that discussions were ongoing regarding the possibility of bringing F1 back to the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).

He said the proposal was being considered following preliminary information that Malaysia could host a replacement race if the Bahrain Grand Prix is unable to proceed.

Taufiq said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the ministry had received early information on the matter, with further announcements expected once a final decision is reached.

Malaysia last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 2017, but SIC has continued to remain part of the MotoGP calendar and holds the FIA Grade 1 licence required to organise F1 events.

Petronas, which has sponsored the Mercedes F1 team since 2010, was previously reported in 2024 to be planning a possible F1 comeback in Malaysia in 2026, although the company had denied the claim.

Meanwhile, SIC continues to host major motorsport events, including MotoGP races, and Petronas secured the naming rights for the circuit for three years in October 2023.

The 2026 F1 season was initially planned as a 24-race championship, and additional replacement races could help restore the calendar to between 22 and 23 races while fulfilling broadcasting commitments.
