The United States launched missile strikes on targets across Iran on Friday as President Donald Trump warned Tehran and its Houthi allies in Yemen of possible “major military punishment”, while keeping the possibility of a diplomatic agreement open.
The latest escalation comes two weeks after the collapse of a temporary ceasefire aimed at ending the conflict. Iran responded by targeting US military bases in neighbouring Arab countries and warned it could strike non-military facilities used by American personnel.
Trump said the US had not yet decided whether to carry out additional large-scale attacks, but confirmed that discussions with Iran were ongoing.
“We are talking to them. I think they’re being serious,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that a military option remained available if negotiations failed.
The US president said there were two possible paths forward, either continuing military operations with greater intensity or pursuing what he described as a “smarter strategy” through a negotiated settlement.
However, Trump warned that American forces remained prepared for further action, saying the country was “locked and loaded”.
The conflict has also raised tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route where thousands have been killed during nearly five months of fighting. The ongoing clashes have contributed to rising concerns over inflation and the global economy.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi movement, which controls parts of the country, has announced a naval blockade affecting shipping routes near the region. Trump said Iran would be held responsible for any further attacks carried out by the group.
The US military said its latest air strikes marked the 13th consecutive night of attacks against Iranian targets. Iran’s health ministry reported 59 deaths and 666 injuries since fighting with US forces resumed in late June.
Iranian military officials also warned of retaliation, saying they would target US forces in response to Iranian casualties. The Pentagon reported that 18 American service members have been killed, while more than 100 have been injured since July 7.
Amid the rising tensions, Pakistan is reportedly exploring efforts to restart stalled talks between Washington and Tehran, following diplomatic initiatives involving China.
The conflict has also disrupted global shipping, with some oil tankers changing routes to avoid dangerous waters, while insurance costs for vessels operating in the region continue to rise.
The US has advised its citizens across the Middle East to remain cautious as Iran continues threatening American military positions, including facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain.
