Tensions involving Iran and the United States have expanded into the Caspian Sea after Tehran accused Ukraine of carrying out an attack on a commercial vessel linked to Iran, resulting in one death.
The allegation has drawn Ukraine, which is still engaged in a war with Russia, into the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The claim emerged after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised what he described as the outcome of a “long-range strike” in the Caspian Sea through a social media post, which was believed to refer to vessels transporting military cargo for Tehran.
However, Zelenskyy did not provide further details regarding the vessels involved or the nature of the operation.
Following the claim, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to issue a protest over what it described as a “malicious and criminal” attack.
Meanwhile, tensions in the Gulf region have reportedly eased slightly since Saturday after Washington temporarily halted its offensive campaign against Iran following attacks by Houthi militants on Saudi Arabian oil facilities along the Red Sea coast.
The US military said in a statement that its maritime blockade against Tehran remains in place but did not explain the reason behind the temporary pause after 13 consecutive days of strikes against Iran.
The New York Times, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that US President Donald Trump had once again changed course by deciding not to proceed with plans for a more aggressive military operation against Iran.
The report said the President and his advisers were concerned that an expanding conflict could weaken US defence reserves, strain Washington’s ties with Gulf allies and disrupt global energy supplies and economic stability.
