Formula 1 will return to Malaysia for the first time since 2017, with Sepang International Circuit set to host the Bahrain Grand Prix from Oct 2 to 4, 2026.
The decision comes after changes to the 2026 F1 calendar following instability in the Middle East caused by the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which affected planned races in the region.
The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were initially removed from the calendar, creating a five-week gap in April. Formula 1 then explored alternative venues to maintain a complete racing schedule.
Sepang emerged as a suitable option due to its close proximity to Singapore, with the Malaysian circuit located around 300km away. An agreement was later reached between Bahrain, the FIA, Formula 1 and Malaysian authorities for Sepang to host the race.
The 2026 season will now feature a triple-header from Azerbaijan to Singapore between late September and mid-October, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix scheduled on a Saturday to ease logistical arrangements.
Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed Malaysia’s return, saying the sport’s ability to adapt had allowed it to deliver a full and exciting calendar for fans worldwide.
He added that Sepang remains a special venue in Formula 1 history and would provide a memorable experience for spectators at the circuit and those watching globally.
Malaysia previously hosted the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix annually from 1999 until 2017 before Sepang ended its contract due to declining ticket sales, television ratings and financial concerns.
Several current F1 drivers have raced at Sepang in the past, including Pierre Gasly, who made his Formula 1 debut at the final Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017.
Sebastian Vettel remains the most successful driver at Sepang with four victories, while Fernando Alonso has recorded three wins at the circuit. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most pole positions at the track with five.
Despite the changes, Formula 1 is maintaining its planned 23-race calendar, with the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds still scheduled as the season-ending events, although their status remains dependent on developments in the Middle East.
