National weightlifting star Mohamad Aniq Kasdan delivered Malaysia’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after emerging victorious in the men’s 60kg event at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo.
Aniq secured the title with a combined lift of 273kg, made up of 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk. His impressive performance also saw him set a new Commonwealth Games record.
The Malaysian lifter finished ahead of India’s Rishikanta Singh Chanambam, who recorded a total lift of 264kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya claimed bronze with 260kg.
The victory ended Malaysia’s wait for a gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Games and added to the country’s medal tally, following national para powerlifting champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin’s bronze medal earlier in the competition.
Aniq entered the Games as the defending Commonwealth champion after winning the men’s 55kg event at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a total lift of 249kg.
During that campaign, he lifted 107kg in the snatch and 142kg in the clean and jerk, performances that also set a Commonwealth Games record at the time. His latest triumph further cements his status as one of Malaysia’s top weightlifting talents.
