Indonesia’s central bank governor has stepped down before the end of his term as the country faces mounting economic challenges, including a weakening rupiah and rising energy costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
President Prabowo Subianto has accepted the resignation of Perry Warjiyo, who has served as Governor of Bank Indonesia since 2018, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced at a press conference in Jakarta.
Perry’s second term was scheduled to end in 2028. According to Prasetyo, the governor submitted his resignation on July 25, citing personal reasons. No further explanation was provided.
President Prabowo expressed his appreciation for Perry’s service, thanking him for his dedication and leadership during his seven years at the helm of Bank Indonesia.
Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti has been appointed as interim governor while the government prepares to name a permanent successor.
Indonesia’s economy has come under increasing pressure following a sharp rise in global energy prices caused by the Middle East conflict. According to Bloomberg News, the rupiah has fallen by around seven per cent since the conflict began, making it the worst-performing currency in Asia during the period.
