A father is believed to have shot dead his wife and their six children before setting their home on fire and taking his own life in what authorities describe as a suspected murder-suicide in the US state of Michigan.
The victims were identified as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children, aged between five and 15. Their bodies were discovered inside the family’s home in Grand Haven Township after emergency crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the property.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, all eight victims died from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the fire was deliberately started in several areas of the house after the shootings, although the circumstances remain under investigation.
“The investigation at this point shows that this is a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks told reporters. Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy that we may never fully understand.”
Amanda, who worked as a substitute teacher at a local elementary school, was remembered by family and colleagues as a caring and compassionate person. In a previous tribute, the local school district praised her for consistently showing empathy, patience and kindness to students.
Amanda’s parents, Becky and Steve Lawwill, said they were devastated by the loss of their daughter and grandchildren. Her sister, Molly Cessna, also paid tribute, saying the family was struggling to process the tragedy and asked for continued prayers and support.
Amanda and Kristopher met while working at a beverage company in 2008 and married the following year. They welcomed their first child in 2011, later had two more sons, adopted two daughters, and eventually had another biological son.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. No further details have been released regarding a possible motive.
