Malaysian weightlifter Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali made a dream debut at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning the men’s 94kg gold medal in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Competing at the Scottish Event Campus Armadillo, the 22-year-old lifted a total of 347kg to top the podium, comprising 150kg in the snatch and 197kg in the clean and jerk. His clean and jerk effort also set a new Commonwealth Games record.
Mohamad Syahmi edged Canada’s Alex Bellemarre, who claimed silver with a total lift of 346kg after recording 159kg in the snatch and 187kg in the clean and jerk.
Australia’s Oliver Riley Saxton took the bronze medal with a combined lift of 336kg, made up of 156kg in the snatch and 180kg in the clean and jerk.
The victory marks the biggest achievement of Mohamad Syahmi’s career to date, surpassing his previous best result of a silver medal at the 2025 SEA Games.
His triumph also continued Malaysia’s impressive run in weightlifting, with the national team now claiming five gold medals through Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (60kg), Muhammad Aznil Bidin (65kg), Muhammad Erry Hidayat (79kg), Muhammad Hafizuddin Ruslin (88kg), and Mohamad Syahmi in the 94kg category.
Malaysia has now won six gold medals overall at the Games, including one from Paralympic long jump star Datuk Abdul Latif Romly, who captured the men’s T20 title.
The national contingent has also collected two silver medals and three bronze medals from lawn bowls, powerlifting and weightlifting.
