Woman Gains Back 50kg After Drinking Five To Six Bubble Teas A Day Following Weight-Loss Surgery

Date:

A female university student in China regained all the weight she had lost after undergoing weight-loss surgery because she drank five to six cups of bubble tea every day, according to a doctor.

Dr Liu Yang, deputy chief physician of the Thyroid and Weight Management Surgery Department at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, shared the case with local media on July 28.

The student, identified by the pseudonym Tiantian, previously weighed more than 200 jin (about 100kg) before undergoing bariatric surgery.

Following the procedure, she successfully reduced her weight to around 100 jin (about 50kg).

However, after the surgery, she failed to maintain a healthy diet and reportedly consumed at least five to six cups of bubble tea daily, often treating the sugary drink as a replacement for water.

As a result, her weight eventually rebounded to more than 200 jin (about 100kg).

Dr Liu explained that bubble tea contains extremely high amounts of sugar, which is rapidly absorbed by the body and easily converted into fat.

He stressed that weight-loss surgery is only a supportive treatment and not a permanent solution.

According to Dr Liu, long-term weight management depends on maintaining a disciplined diet and engaging in regular physical activity, both of which are essential for preventing weight regain after surgery.
