Tom Holland has revealed that he is already thinking about how his journey as Spider-Man will eventually come to an end, saying he hopes to pass the iconic superhero role on to a new generation.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on July 30, the 30-year-old actor said he and the creative team have been planning the future of the character since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
“There’s a whole plan that we’ve been working on since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s laid out. It’s going to change for sure, but I have a really clear vision for passing on the baton, and I think it’s really exciting,” Holland said.
He added that discussing the future of the character is one of the aspects of Spider-Man that excites him the most.
Holland made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War (2016) before starring in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
He is the third actor to portray Spider-Man on the big screen, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
In a separate interview with Esquire, Holland said he hopes to mentor whoever eventually takes over the role, just as Robert Downey Jr. guided him during his early years in the Marvel franchise.
“In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” he said.
When asked who he would like to see as the next Spider-Man, Holland named Owen Cooper, the breakout star of the series Adolescence.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously he’s super talented and the talk of the town right now,” Holland said.
Holland’s latest Marvel film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, premiered in cinemas on July 31.
