The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) recorded 2,001 factory fire cases since 2021, resulting in losses estimated at RM4.21 billion.
JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said the figures reflected the serious impact of fire incidents and highlighted the importance of stronger risk management measures at industrial premises.
He said factory fire cases have shown an increasing trend since 2021, with the highest number recorded last year involving 463 incidents, an increase of 28.6 per cent compared with the previous year. The total losses recorded during the period amounted to RM770.69 million.
Nor Hisham said that as of the second quarter of this year, 222 factory fire cases had been reported, averaging about 37 incidents each month.
Although the current rate remained relatively consistent, he warned that failure to address fire safety issues could have a major impact on industries, including business operations and workers’ safety.
He stressed that investments in proper fire safety systems, employee training, skills development and a strong safety culture were essential to protect businesses and ensure operational continuity.
Nor Hisham said JBPM would continue strengthening compliance through professional, transparent and responsible enforcement efforts.
He added that 1,878 factory-category premises were inspected in 2025, representing a 20 per cent increase compared with 1,563 inspections carried out the previous year.
During the same period, the number of premises issued with Fire Hazard Notices (MBK) increased from 706 cases in 2024 to 1,191 cases in 2025.
For the first six months of this year, JBPM conducted 945 factory inspections, with 637 premises receiving MBK notices. A total of 426 fire hazards were detected, including 16 cases involving failure to comply with issued notices.
Nor Hisham also said a special discussion involving the Fire Safety Division director, zone chiefs and branch heads nationwide was held recently to address issues related to compliance with existing laws and improve cooperation with local authorities.
He added that continuous collaboration between enforcement agencies and industry players was crucial to reducing factory fire risks and protecting lives as well as property.
