A Form Five student was arrested after allegedly riding his motorcycle dangerously and attempting to flee from police during an anti-street racing operation in Gua Musang early Friday morning.
The 17-year-old was believed to have been testing his motorcycle’s speed along Jalan Persiaran Raya before losing control and crashing into a bush while trying to escape a police inspection at around 2am.
Gua Musang district police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the Op Motosikal (Samseng Jalanan) operation was launched following complaints from the public over increasing street racing activities in the area.
He said the operation involved one officer and six personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters.
“During surveillance, officers spotted a motorcycle being ridden in a dangerous manner and instructed the rider to stop for inspection.
“However, the suspect sped off in an attempt to evade police before losing control and crashing into a nearby bush, where he was successfully apprehended,” he said in a statement.
Police also seized the motorcycle, while the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.
Throughout the operation, police inspected 22 individuals and 18 motorcycles, issuing a total of 57 traffic summonses for various offences, including riding without a licence, registration plate violations, illegal exhaust modifications, missing side mirrors, lack of insurance, expired road tax, unauthorised vehicle accessories and allowing unlicensed individuals to operate vehicles.
Choon Foo said enforcement operations would continue to be intensified, particularly in areas identified as hotspots for illegal street racing activities.
He also urged parents to monitor their children’s movements and prevent them from becoming involved in illegal racing or riding motorcycles without valid licences, warning that such activities not only violate the law but also pose serious risks that could lead to fatal accidents.
