The Works Ministry (KKR) will prioritise the installation of street lights in high-risk and poorly lit areas across Sabah and Sarawak, subject to operational needs and approved funding.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry remains committed to improving road safety by installing targeted solar-powered LED street lights (ISLED) based on accident risks, technical suitability and cost-effectiveness.
For 2026, the government has allocated RM34.19 million to install street lights at 362 locations along Federal Roads nationwide.
In Sabah, 61 locations were fitted with solar LED street lights between 2023 and 2025 at a cost of RM6.4 million. A further RM2.8 million has been allocated in 2026 to install lighting at 28 additional locations.
Nanta said priority will be given to accident-prone areas, junctions, sharp bends, bridges, locations far from the electricity grid, and areas frequently affected by cable theft and vandalism.
He also announced that under Budget 2026, the MADANI Government has allocated RM30 million through the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to install solar-powered LED street lights at high-risk locations.
Along the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway alone, 297 solar-powered LED street lights will be installed, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
