A prison officer has been remanded for six days after being arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations of soliciting and accepting a RM3,000 bribe to smuggle prohibited items into a prison.
The male suspect, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested at about 11.50am on Tuesday at his residence in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
The remand order, effective until Aug 10, was issued by Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani after an application by the MACC at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
According to sources, preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged offence took place in March while the suspect was serving at a prison in Melaka.
Investigators believe the suspect requested and accepted the bribe as an inducement to bring prohibited articles into the prison.
The source added that the payment was allegedly made through a money transfer into the suspect’s e-wallet account.
Melaka MACC director Datuk Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
The case reflects the authorities’ continued efforts to combat corruption within enforcement agencies and ensure integrity is upheld across public institutions.
