Illegal Bitcoin mining activities were uncovered in Sabak Bernam after the Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) raided four premises across two locations in the district yesterday.
The operation, which ran from 5pm until midnight, was carried out by the MDSB Enforcement Department in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as part of efforts to crack down on activities involving energy theft and unlicensed digital investments.
The raid was led by the MDSB Deputy President and involved 11 enforcement officers, nine TNB technical officers and 15 technical personnel. Four premises in Sungai Besar and Sabak Bernam town were inspected during the operation.
A total of 164 servers believed to have been used for cryptocurrency mining were seized during the raids. The discovery highlights the scale of illegal digital currency mining operations that can operate discreetly from commercial or other premises.
MDSB said the premises were suspected of conducting Bitcoin mining activities without authorisation while also illegally tapping electricity supplies. Such operations can result in substantial electricity consumption and pose additional risks to the surrounding power infrastructure.
The authority said firm action would continue to be taken to curb energy-related crimes as well as illegal digital investment activities. Enforcement operations involving relevant agencies are important in ensuring that premises suspected of abusing electricity supplies are identified and dealt with.
Members of the public have also been urged to report any suspicious premises believed to be involved in activities that violate the law. Information provided by the community could help authorities detect illegal operations and prevent further losses or risks associated with such activities.
