Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been urged to reconsider his remarks regarding government allocations being channelled directly to the people instead of through Members of Parliament (MPs).
AMANAH National Youth executive committee member Ahmad Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda said a review was necessary to ensure the reform agenda was not undermined by internal political manoeuvring.
He said Pakatan Harapan (PH) was already working to rebuild the confidence of its supporters following a series of electoral defeats, and warned that internal disputes could further weaken the coalition.
“PH is working to rebuild the confidence of its supporters after several consecutive election defeats. Enough with giving ammunition to any side and instead implement the outstanding Reformasi agenda using the limited time that remains,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Ahmad Fadhli Umar said he understood why opposition MPs had not received such allocations after refusing to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ensuring the stability of the government.
However, he questioned whether government MPs who had their constituency allocations withdrawn were also being subjected to the same condition over alleged attempts to topple the administration.
His remarks followed concerns over the appointment of the Prime Minister’s Political Secretary, Datuk Azman Abidin, as the Ampang Parliamentary Coordinator. The role is intended to ensure assistance and welfare programmes for residents are delivered in an organised, efficient and effective manner.
Ahmad Fadhli Umar said the move could create a perception that the role of elected MPs was being sidelined when access to constituency allocations was restricted and instead coordinated through appointed officers.
He said if the objective was to ensure aid was distributed systematically, MPs should be given access to the allocations, subject to clear and transparent monitoring mechanisms.
He added that such an approach would also be consistent with PH’s GE15 election manifesto, which pledged equal constituency allocations for all MPs regardless of their political party.
“The reports that several MPs supporting the Unity Government are also facing the same issue only strengthen the need for an open explanation, particularly as these developments occurred following internal party turmoil,” he said.
