At least 21 people were killed and another 37 injured after two passenger buses collided in western Niger on Friday, according to Xinhua, citing the Niger News Agency (ANP).
The crash occurred along the Maradi-Madaoua road, about 55 kilometres from the town of Madaoua, with emergency teams responding to the scene following the collision.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine what caused the two buses to crash, as officials continue efforts to improve road safety across the country.
The accident comes as Niger intensifies public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes, which remain a serious concern across the West African nation.
The latest tragedy has again highlighted the challenges faced by road users in Niger, particularly as authorities work to address the country’s high number of traffic accidents.
Data from Niger’s Road Safety Agency, as reported by ANP, showed that more than 7,100 road accidents were recorded nationwide in 2025.
Those crashes resulted in more than 1,200 deaths, while over 4,400 people suffered serious injuries, underlining the scale of the country’s road safety problem.
The latest collision involving two passenger buses is expected to add further pressure on authorities to strengthen preventive measures and promote safer driving practices on major routes.
