A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and three motorcycles along Jalan Keramat Pulai here on Sunday.
The accident occurred at around 4.30pm, with the victim later pronounced dead by a medical officer at Cameron Highlands Hospital at about 9.45pm.
Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamzah said initial investigations found that the MPV was being driven by a 52-year-old man from Simpang Pulai towards Cameron Highlands.
He said the accident occurred when the 22-year-old motorcyclist, who was travelling in the opposite direction, allegedly entered the MPV’s lane while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
“The MPV driver tried to avoid the motorcycle by moving towards the road shoulder, but the motorcycle collided with the front of the vehicle,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Two other motorcycles travelling from the Cameron Highlands direction were also caught up in the incident after their riders attempted to avoid the crash.
All three motorcyclists fell and sustained injuries, while the MPV driver escaped unhurt.
The three injured riders were taken to Cameron Highlands Hospital for treatment. The two other motorcyclists, aged 25 and 24, suffered minor injuries.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Muhammad Najib also urged anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the accident to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting the Ipoh District Police Headquarters.
