Vietnam has started construction of what it describes as the country’s largest and most advanced domestically produced anti-submarine frigate, according to a military-run newspaper.
The warship is being built at the Defence Ministry’s Song Thu Shipyard in Danang City, with most of its weapons and military systems expected to be developed or assembled locally.
The project forms part of Vietnam’s broader push to strengthen its domestic defence industry and reduce its reliance on imported military equipment, much of which has traditionally been sourced from Russia.
Vietnam has long been involved in maritime disputes with China and other countries claiming parts of the South China Sea. The development of a more capable domestic naval industry is therefore seen as an important part of the country’s efforts to strengthen its maritime defence capabilities.
According to a government statement, Vietnam aims to develop a defence industry that is “autonomous, self-reliant, self-strengthening, dual-use and modern”.
Military telecommunications and technology group Viettel, along with other defence research and manufacturing organisations, will work with the Vietnamese Navy and Song Thu Shipyard throughout the project.
Their involvement will include developing and installing weapons and other military equipment on the new vessel.
Vietnam’s navy has undergone significant modernisation over the past several decades, including acquiring Russian-built Kilo-class submarines and Gepard-class frigates. It has also expanded its fleet of locally produced missile boats and patrol vessels.
The new frigate project highlights Hanoi’s growing focus on domestic defence production as it seeks to strengthen its military capabilities while diversifying its sources of defence equipment.
Vietnam is also scheduled to host the Vietnam International Defence Expo in Hanoi in December, marking the third edition of the biennial event as the country continues efforts to expand its domestic defence sector and attract international cooperation.
