Two accused persons fled from the Kulim Magistrates’ Court here on Wednesday after their case proceedings, but were later recaptured by police at about 10am the same day.
Kulim district police chief Superintendent Syamsul Sinring said both individuals, aged 31 and 27, had initially appeared in court to face charges under Sections 324 and 353 of the Penal Code relating to a case in Serdang.
He said the pair had previously been charged at the Kulim Magistrates’ Court on April 30 and were granted bail while awaiting trial.
“One was granted bail of RM4,000 while the other was granted RM3,000. The case was subsequently fixed for mention on June 8, July 12 and Aug 12 for document submission and case management,” he said.
Syamsul said the incident occurred after the case proceedings, when the accused allegedly spotted personnel from the Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD SPS) waiting at the front entrance of the court.
He said the two then escaped through the rear exit of the building while officers were attempting to recapture them.
“One of them ran within the court compound and climbed down using a pillar from the first floor, while the other re-entered the building before fleeing through the rear area,” he said.
The dramatic escape was captured in a 23-second video that later went viral on social media, showing one of the accused climbing over the outer fence of the court.
Police subsequently managed to recapture both individuals, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape are ongoing.
