Fishmonger Chases Man With Butcher’s Knife, Pleads Guilty In Court

Date:

A 55-year-old fishmonger who chased a man while carrying a butcher’s knife was brought before the Kuala Terengganu Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a criminal intimidation charge.

The accused, Zawawi Zahid, entered the guilty plea after the charge was read out before Magistrate Yusnaliza Mohammad Yusoff.

According to the charge sheet, Zawawi allegedly threatened the victim by chasing him while armed with a butcher’s knife at a petrol station in Pasir Panjang at about 4.30pm on Aug 9.

The offence was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction. The case highlights how an act involving a weapon can quickly escalate into serious criminal proceedings.

Zawawi also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of consuming dangerous drugs involving methamphetamine and amphetamine.

The drug offence was allegedly committed at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at the Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters at about 9.30pm on July 9, 2022.

He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Amendment 2002), punishable under Section 15 of the same Act.

The court granted Zawawi bail of RM3,000 for each charge with two sureties. He was also ordered not to interfere with the victim or any witnesses throughout the proceedings.

The court fixed Aug 27 for the submission of case facts and sentencing for both charges.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Anith Nabilah Rusli appeared for the prosecution, while Zawawi was represented by Nurul Husna Zukepeli @ Zulkifli and Nur Jawahir Mohd Zulmajdi from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
