The General Operations Force (PGA) has dismantled suspected cockfighting and illegal gambling activities across eight districts in Sabah, with seizures and confiscations estimated at more than RM9.6 million.
The integrated Op Kandang was carried out over 10 hours from 8am to 6pm, with 14 raids conducted in Penampang, Tawau, Keningau, Semporna, Sandakan, Beluran, Lahad Datu and Kota Marudu.
Sabah PGA Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Nor Omar Sappi said the operation was aimed at curbing illegal cockfighting, gambling and other activities that breached the law.
A total of 128 officers and personnel took part, including 86 members of the Sabah PGA Brigade. The operation was also supported by officers from the Health Ministry, Sabah Veterinary Services Department, local authorities and Sabah Wildlife Department.
Nor Omar said 16 men aged between 31 and 70 were arrested during the 14 raids. They comprised 13 Malaysians and three foreigners, with preliminary checks showing that none had previous criminal records.
He said the total value of items seized and confiscated was estimated at RM9.602 million, with fighting cocks making up the largest portion at RM8.935 million. Various equipment valued at RM650,470 was also seized.
Other items included a dead civet estimated at RM4,000, porcupine quills worth RM11,540 and pangolin scales valued at RM500.
The cases are being investigated under the Sabah Animals Enactment 2015, Sabah Animal Welfare Enactment 2015 and Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, as well as relevant local licensing by-laws.
All suspects and seized items have since been handed over to the relevant agencies for further investigation and action. The operation reflects continued enforcement efforts to disrupt illegal activities operating under the guise of entertainment or private gatherings.
