US President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner may travel to Israel next week for talks on the situation in Gaza, according to a source familiar with the plans.
The possible visit was first reported by Axios, which said Kushner is also expected to meet mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye in Cairo next week as discussions continue over the implementation of Trump’s Gaza plan.
The source said the United States and Israel remain aligned on the objective of disarming Hamas, although Israeli officials have raised concerns about how the process should be carried out.
“We agree with the Israelis on the goal of disarming Hamas but they have expressed concerns which are valid and we have been working through them,” the source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
According to the source, the main purpose of Kushner’s potential visit would be to find a way to move forward with the implementation of Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan, which was introduced in late 2025.
Trump said in late July that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups operating in Gaza.
Under the proposed arrangement, implementation would take place in stages. Israeli forces would withdraw from parts of Gaza as disarmament progressed, while an International Stabilisation Force would work alongside a new Palestinian police force to maintain security in the territory.
However, the plan has faced opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is seeking re-election in a vote expected in October. Netanyahu has publicly rejected Trump’s proposal.
Hamas, meanwhile, has said it accepted the plan but stressed that implementation would depend on Israel fulfilling its own commitments, including withdrawing its forces and stopping attacks.
The Gaza ceasefire has repeatedly come under strain. According to Gaza health officials and Israeli figures, more than 1,250 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israeli attacks since the truce began in October, while four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants. Hamas does not routinely disclose its own casualty figures.
The conflict has caused widespread devastation across Gaza, with tens of thousands of Palestinians killed during Israel’s military campaign. The territory has also faced a severe humanitarian crisis, including widespread displacement and hunger.
The conflict began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel in October 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel has described its subsequent military campaign as an act of self-defence.
With disagreements over disarmament, Israeli withdrawals and security arrangements still unresolved, Kushner’s possible trip could form part of renewed efforts by the Trump administration to push the Gaza plan towards implementation.
