Car Owner Fined RM83,000 After AI Cameras Catch 96 Traffic Violations In 5 Months

Date:

A car owner in northern Vietnam has been fined VND474.6 million (around RM83,000) after AI-powered traffic cameras recorded 96 violations involving his vehicle over a period of just five months.

Phu Tho Province traffic police said on August 13 that the 47-year-old owner, who lives in Xuan Lung Commune, was penalised after his Hanoi-registered car was repeatedly captured by traffic cameras along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

The road runs through the Viet Tri, Thanh Mieu and Van Phu wards, where the vehicle was detected committing multiple offences between February 22 and July 30.

According to records on VNeTraffic, Vietnam’s national traffic database operated by the Ministry of Public Security, most of the violations involved speeding.

The vehicle was recorded travelling between 5kph and 35kph above the applicable speed limits. In July alone, the car was caught speeding 21 times.

Police discovered three additional offences when the owner appeared for questioning. His compulsory civil liability insurance had expired, while the vehicle also lacked a valid technical safety and environmental inspection certificate.

Authorities further found that the man had never completed the required vehicle registration or obtained new licence plates after purchasing the car.

The large fine highlights how increasingly widespread automated traffic monitoring can make repeated violations easier for authorities to identify and trace back to vehicle owners.

With 96 violations recorded in just over five months, the case also serves as a stark reminder that repeated traffic offences can quickly result in substantial financial penalties when detected through automated enforcement systems.
