Police are searching for two women, including one wearing a face veil, who are believed to be involved in the theft of a gold bracelet worth about RM16,000 from a goldsmith shop at Batu 8, Kampung Batu Enam, Jalan Kelantan, here, yesterday.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the incident occurred at about 10.59am, while a report was lodged by a sales assistant at the shop at around 10.25pm the same day.
He said the theft was discovered when employees checked their stock and found that a 916 solid-link gold bracelet weighing 28.01 grammes was missing.
“Checks on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed two women entering the shop, before one of them asked an employee to display several gold bracelets for comparison,” he said.
According to Azli, the suspect then placed one of the bracelets on her wrist and concealed it under her sleeve. She allegedly dropped the bracelet onto the floor, stepped on it before picking it up and placing it inside her handbag.
At the same time, the second woman is believed to have distracted the employee by pointing towards another gold bracelet, preventing the worker from noticing what her companion was doing.
The pair then left the shop, claiming they wanted to get money to make payment, but never returned.
Police said the first suspect was wearing a grey robe, black headscarf and black face veil, while the second was dressed in a dark blue robe with a blue floral-patterned headscarf.
The shop employee is able to identify the second suspect but could not identify the first as her face was covered by the veil.
Azli said police are actively tracking down both suspects and the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
CCTV footage of the incident has also gone viral on social media, showing the two women allegedly concealing the bracelet before leaving the premises.
