A 30-year-old man was sentenced to one month in jail and fined RM2,500 by the Magistrates’ Court here today after pleading guilty to exposing himself to a 75-year-old woman.
Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli imposed the sentence on Muhammad Syahmi Mohad Md Jalel, who will face an additional four months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
The offence was committed against the elderly woman in Kampung Baru Mambau here on July 31, 2026. He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum five-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction.
During mitigation, lawyer Zaiful Bahrin Kamde told the court that his client was married and had two young children, aged four and 12 months. He also said the accused worked for a vehicle cleaning company and earned RM1,800 a month.
The lawyer said the accused’s guilty plea had saved the court’s time and that he had expressed remorse, apologised for his actions and promised not to repeat the offence.
He urged the court to impose a fine of no more than RM3,000, citing his client’s modest income and family commitments.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurnadiahani Ideris sought an appropriate jail term or maximum fine, stressing the importance of public interest and the impact of the offence on the victim.
She said a heavier sentence would serve as a deterrent and provide a lesson not only to the accused but also to the wider community.
The court ordered the one-month jail sentence to run from the date of the accused’s arrest.
Meanwhile, the accused claimed trial to a separate charge involving an alleged similar act against a 71-year-old woman along the roadside at Kampung Baru Mambau 1 on Aug 3, 2026.
For the second case, the prosecution initially proposed bail of RM9,000. The court instead allowed bail at RM3,000 with one surety and imposed an additional condition barring the accused from contacting or interfering with the victim and prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded.
The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 18.
