Hot and relatively dry conditions are expected to continue across much of Borneo, including Sarawak, until Aug 20, raising concerns over haze and reduced visibility, particularly in southern parts of the state.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the weather pattern was being influenced by southerly winds and a still-high number of hotspots recorded across Borneo. The combination of prolonged heat and limited rainfall could worsen air quality in affected areas.
As of 10am today, 10 locations nationwide recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings based on data from the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), with most of the affected areas located in Sarawak.
The situation has also prompted increased attention to visibility and air quality, especially in areas where dry weather persists. Residents in affected locations are advised to remain alert to changes in conditions as the haze situation can fluctuate depending on wind direction and rainfall.
Meanwhile, MetMalaysia has separately issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain warning for Perlis, Kedah, Penang and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur until 1pm today.
The warning also covers several areas in Perak, namely Kerian, Selama, Larut Matang, Manjung and Bagan Datuk, as well as parts of Selangor including Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Gombak and Hulu Selangor.
MetMalaysia advised the public to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and warnings through its official website, social media platforms and the myCuaca application.
