A total of 1,259 containers containing electronic waste (e-waste) at Port Klang are targeted to be removed from Malaysia by the end of this year through coordinated enforcement involving several relevant agencies.
Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Agency (AKPS) Port Klang commander Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said 148 containers had already been removed during the first phase of the operation.
He said the second phase is currently ongoing, with AKPS working alongside the Port Klang Authority and Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) to remove another 533 containers.
“So far, we have successfully removed 255 containers from Malaysia.
“For the third phase, which begins on Oct 1, we will remove the remaining 578 e-waste containers, estimated to weigh eight million kilogrammes, subject to the investigations being conducted,” he said.
Nik Ezanee said the containers involved were linked to cases detained since 2024, highlighting the scale and complexity of efforts to clear long-standing e-waste cases from the port.
He said no containers containing e-waste had been detected re-entering Malaysia after being shipped out. However, authorities had identified containers returning to the country carrying other types of cargo.
“Inspections have been carried out by JKDM and AKPS based on the recorded list, but those containers did not contain e-waste,” he said.
Nik Ezanee also gave an assurance that the effectiveness of scanning machines at Port Klang was being continuously monitored, with officers regularly receiving training to improve their ability to detect suspicious cargo.
“I do not deny that there are weaknesses, but I want to stress that we have never stopped improving our services,” he said.
The coordinated effort reflects the authorities’ continued focus on clearing illegally imported e-waste while strengthening monitoring and enforcement at one of the country’s busiest ports.
