Man Claims Trial Over Alleged Acid Attack On Girlfriend

Date:

A 21-year-old delivery contractor pleaded not guilty at the Magistrates’ Court here on Friday to a charge of intentionally causing injury to his girlfriend using a liquid suspected to be hydrochloric acid.

S Taswinder entered the plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani.

According to the charge, Taswinder is accused of intentionally injuring S Liviniya, 21, using a dangerous substance believed to be hydrochloric acid.

The alleged incident took place at a women’s toilet in a shopping centre here at about 5.44pm on July 30.

The charge was framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, a fine, whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Nabihah Sofian applied for bail of RM10,000 with one surety and requested an additional condition preventing the accused from contacting or interfering with the alleged victim.

However, defence lawyer Anasuha Atiqah Mat Saidi urged the court to impose a lower bail amount, saying her client had cooperated with authorities throughout the investigation.

She said the proposed bail was excessive as the purpose of bail was to ensure the accused attended court when required.

The lawyer also told the court that Taswinder had previously gone to the police station voluntarily to have his statement recorded, which she said demonstrated his willingness to comply with the legal process.

Following submissions from both sides, Khairatul Animah granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety and imposed the additional condition that Taswinder must not interfere with the alleged victim.

The court fixed Sept 17 for mention of the case.
