PAS is taking steps through Perikatan Nasional (PN) to establish an understanding with Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, as well as the upcoming Melaka polls, after identifying what it described as a “dangerous” political threat.
PAS deputy spiritual leader Datuk Ahmad Yakob said party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had assessed the current political landscape before deciding that greater understanding among Malay-Muslim parties was necessary to face the perceived threat.
He said the approach was also aimed at ensuring Muslim and Malay-based parties could work together within the democratic process to protect their political strength.
“This danger cannot be faced unless Muslims, Islamic parties and Malay-Muslim parties come together to prevent the rise or anger of those who are against Islam.
“In the context of a democratic country, if we cannot unite Muslims and Malay-Muslim parties, we may not be able to safeguard the strength of Islam itself,” he said.
Ahmad was speaking at the launch of the PAS Tumpat election machinery at Kampung Sedar here on Friday. PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad was also present at the event.
He said PAS needed cooperation, alliances and mutual understanding to face groups it considered dangerous, adding that the party would seek an approach that caused less harm.
“Without awareness among Muslims and Malay-Muslim parties, we may find ourselves caught in a situation that is extremely detrimental to us,” he said.
Ahmad also stressed that PAS election machinery must remain active and continue preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16), which he said could be held at any time.
He expressed confidence that preparations had already been made at the grassroots level, but urged all divisions to strengthen their efforts and ensure the party was better organised.
“Every election machinery must ensure preparations are carried out more effectively so that the party can face GE16 in a more organised manner,” he said.
