An enforcement officer has been remanded for allegedly accepting about RM190,000 in bribes from a cooking oil packaging company in Perak.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was ordered to be remanded for three days from Aug 14 to 16 following an application at the Ipoh Magistrates’ Court.
The remand order was issued by Senior Assistant Registrar Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari after the suspect was detained when he appeared to give a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Taiping office at about 5pm on Thursday.
Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly received the payments in exchange for helping the company obtain an application for subsidised cooking oil quota from a ministry.
He is also suspected of accepting the alleged bribes as an inducement to refrain from taking enforcement action against the company.
According to a source, the alleged offences are believed to have taken place between 2022 and 2026.
“The suspect is believed to have received 19 cheques, which were deposited into his personal bank account,” the source said.
Perak MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest when contacted.
The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, as authorities continue to examine the alleged transactions and the suspect’s dealings with the company.
