The 37-year-old tanker lorry driver involved in a crash that claimed the lives of a mother and her 12-year-old son in Temerloh has been remanded for four days to assist police investigations.
Temerloh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasyim Bahron said the suspect was remanded from today until Tuesday.
He said the driver was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly driving recklessly and causing a fatal accident.
“The urine screening test conducted on the man was negative for drugs,” he said in a statement.
The accident occurred at about 4pm yesterday at Kilometre 9 of Jalan Temerloh-Triang near Kampung Lebak, when a tanker carrying 32,000 litres of diesel and petrol overturned and crushed the car occupied by the victims.
The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, leaving the woman and her son trapped inside the car. The two victims were later confirmed to have died at the scene.
The tanker driver, meanwhile, sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Preliminary investigations found that the tanker was travelling from Seremban towards Temerloh when it allegedly lost control, overturned and landed on the car travelling in the opposite direction from Jerantut to Seremban, Negri Sembilan.
The deceased have been identified as Nur Fatima Abdullah, 39, and her son, Muhamad Fattah Aisy Nuafal Saifulnizam, 12, both from Jerantut.
Mohd Nasyim said post-mortems on the two victims were conducted at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh today.
However, their remains may have to be held until DNA test results are obtained to complete the identification process, although the victims’ family members have already come forward to confirm their identities.
The case remains under investigation as police work to establish the circumstances that led to the tanker overturning and the fatal collision.
