A 56-year-old woman died after her headscarf became caught in the roller mechanism of a floodgate in Sabak Bernam, Selangor.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department received an emergency call at about 3.35pm regarding the incident.
Firefighters were dispatched to the floodgate near Grand Sabak Hotel, where the woman, believed to be a Drainage and Irrigation Department employee, was found lying on the structure.
“Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the woman was found lying on the floodgate,” he said in a statement.
Initial investigations indicated that the victim’s headscarf had become entangled in the floodgate’s roller mechanism, resulting in the fatal incident.
Health Ministry personnel who arrived at the scene later confirmed that the woman had died.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are now being investigated by police, while further details have yet to be released.
The incident also highlights the need for caution when working around moving machinery and mechanical equipment, particularly in areas involving heavy flood-control infrastructure.
