Negeri Sembilan PKR chief Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has accepted responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the Aug 1 state election, including calls from several divisions for him to step down from his state leadership post.
Speaking at the PKR National Congress, Aminuddin said he was prepared to accept the decision of the party leadership and would not avoid accountability for the outcome.
“I led the team, so I am prepared to take responsibility. I do not want to run away from my responsibilities or point fingers at anyone,” he said.
The former two-term Negeri Sembilan menteri besar openly acknowledged that mistakes had been made, admitting that not all decisions were right, strategies had failed to deliver the desired outcome and there were weaknesses within the leadership.
He also apologised for his shortcomings during his tenure as Negeri Sembilan PKR chief, stressing that the position was not something he considered his personal entitlement.
“I am ready to accept any decision made by the party leadership. The position does not belong to me. The trust belongs to the party,” he said.
Aminuddin’s remarks came after six PKR divisions in Negeri Sembilan called for him to relinquish his position following the party’s disappointing showing in the state polls.
PKR contested 16 seats but managed to secure only two. In comparison, DAP, another Pakatan Harapan component, won nine of the 11 seats it contested, while Amanah failed to secure any seat.
The results marked a major setback for the coalition in the state, with Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional collectively winning 25 seats and subsequently forming the Negeri Sembilan state government.
The defeat has placed renewed focus on PKR’s grassroots machinery, campaign strategies and leadership, with the party expected to assess its weaknesses before facing future electoral challenges.
Aminuddin’s willingness to accept responsibility also signals an effort to address internal concerns while leaving the final decision on his position to the party leadership.
