Kelantan police have dismantled a suspected drug trafficking syndicate after arresting a 45-year-old Thai national and seizing 6,000 yaba pills worth RM60,000 in Jalan Kampung Rahmat-Lubok Stol yesterday.
The operation was carried out by the Kelantan Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) at around 7.30pm following intelligence gathering and information received from the public.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspect was believed to have been involved in drug trafficking activities since the beginning of this year.
“An inspection of the suspect’s body uncovered a yellowish paper package containing 6,000 pills suspected to be yaba, with an estimated street value of RM60,000,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Yusoff said the amount of drugs seized could potentially have been distributed to around 6,000 drug users, highlighting the scale of the suspected operation.
Preliminary investigations found that the syndicate allegedly used an illegal crossing in Sungai Golok, Thailand, to smuggle drugs from the neighbouring country into Kelantan before distributing them around the state.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which deals with drug trafficking.
A urine screening also found that the suspect tested positive for amphetamine, while police checks showed that he had no previous criminal record.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days, beginning today until Saturday, to assist with further investigations.
Mohd Yusoff said the latest seizure was the result of continuous intelligence work by Kelantan JSJN, supported by cooperation from members of the public.
