76-Year-Old Woman Dies After 3-Day Harassment by Scammers

Date:

A shocking cybercrime case has stunned the public after a victim reportedly died from a heart attack following harassment by scammers.

The victim, a 76-year-old former doctor in Hyderabad, India, was targeted for three consecutive days by fraudsters, according to Times of India. The scammers, posing as authorities, demanded 660,000 rupees (around RM31,400) and continued threatening the victim even after her death.

Police revealed that the former medical officer from Mamidipudi Nagarjuna Area Hospital in Malakpet was first contacted by the scammer via a WhatsApp video call on September 5. The caller used the Bengaluru police logo as a profile picture and showed fake documents accusing her of being involved in a human trafficking syndicate.

“Fearing arrest after being threatened, the victim complied and transferred money as demanded. The harassment continued for nearly 70 hours, causing extreme stress,” the report stated.

The woman reportedly collapsed at home after complaining of chest pain and was rushed to two hospitals but could not be saved. Her family only learned of the harassment after her funeral on September 9.

Shockingly, the scammer continued sending “good morning” messages the following day.

Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have filed a case, and investigators are now tracing the phone number and bank accounts used by the scammers.
