A man suffered burn injuries to his arm after a restaurant at a hotel in Semporna caught fire around midday on Saturday.
Semporna Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Zainal Sinsian said the department received an emergency call at 12.47pm and arrived at the scene just five minutes later at 12.52pm.
“Upon arrival, the restaurant was already engulfed in flames and was completely destroyed, while about 20 per cent of the hotel building was also affected by the heat from the fire,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
A total of 29 firefighters, including 10 members from the Semporna Water Fire and Rescue team, were involved in the operation. The injured man was subsequently taken to Semporna Hospital by the hotel management for medical treatment.
Firefighters tackled the blaze from both land and sea in an effort to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further to the surrounding areas.
The fire was brought under control in about an hour, while the overall operation was concluded at 4.11pm. The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still being investigated.
