A married couple and another man pleaded not guilty at the Magistrates’ Court today to two charges of trafficking heroin and methamphetamine with a combined gross weight of about 24kg.
K. Mureli, 47, his wife M. Mary, 44, and Adwin Nicholas Xavier, 41, entered their pleas after the charges were read and explained to them before Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman.
The first charge alleges that all three jointly trafficked suspected heroin weighing approximately 17,770 grammes.
The offence was allegedly committed inside a room at a house in Kampung Gajah, Jalan Mersing, at around 5.20pm on August 13.
The three are charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction. If the death penalty is not imposed, the offender is liable to at least 12 strokes of the cane.
For the second charge, the trio are accused of trafficking suspected methamphetamine with an estimated gross weight of 6,687 grammes.
The alleged offence took place at the same location, date and time as the first charge.
They are also charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for the second offence, which carries the same penalties upon conviction.
The court proceedings will continue in accordance with the legal process as investigations into the alleged drug trafficking offences proceed.
