Strong winds and heavy rain damaged part of the roof structure at Kuching International Airport on Tuesday (Aug 25), prompting safety inspections at the affected area.
Malaysia Airports said the storm caused damage to a section of the ceiling along the inner lane of the airport’s pick-up and drop-off area.
The airport operator said the affected section had been secured as teams moved in to assess the situation and coordinate the necessary response.
“Our primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of passengers, airport users and staff,” it said in a statement.
Malaysia Airports added that teams were also working to ensure passengers could continue accessing the terminal safely while efforts were being made to minimise disruption.
Despite the weather-related damage, airport operations remain ongoing.
The incident comes as parts of Sarawak experience periods of heavy rain and strong winds, highlighting the need for continued safety checks at busy public facilities during adverse weather.
Malaysia Airports said further measures would be taken based on the findings of the inspections, with passenger safety remaining the priority.
