Police have detained a 51-year-old man after questioning in connection with the death of a 14-year-old student uncovered allegations that he had sexually harassed the victim’s 15-year-old sister.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspect, who is the mother of the two girls’ boyfriend, was detained to facilitate further investigations into the alleged sexual offence.
“The case came to light during our investigation into the death of the 14-year-old girl. A separate investigation paper has been opened against the 51-year-old suspect under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017,” he said.
Fadil said the suspect had been remanded for seven days until Aug 31 as police continued to gather evidence and record statements related to the allegations.
The investigation follows the death of the 14-year-old girl, who died while receiving emergency treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Aug 18. A sudden death report was subsequently opened following the teenager’s death.
The teenager was a student at a secondary school in Setapak. The Wangsa Maju district police headquarters later received a report from her mother on Aug 19 alleging that her daughter had been subjected to bullying.
The bullying allegations are being investigated under Section 507B of the Penal Code, which covers threatening, insulting or abusive acts or communications intended to cause emotional distress, fear or anxiety.
Fadil said police had so far recorded statements from around 90 individuals, including teachers, students, family members and other witnesses, as investigations into the teenager’s death and related allegations continue.
Police are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the various allegations based on evidence gathered during the ongoing investigations.
