A 29-year-old man was killed while two others were injured after a collision involving three vehicles and a pedestrian near Masjid Jalan Baru here early today.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 2.31am regarding the crash.
The accident involved a BMW, Perodua Myvi and Proton Persona, with a pedestrian also caught up in the incident. The BMW driver and passenger were trapped inside the vehicle when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters from the Prai Fire and Rescue Station used specialised rescue equipment to free both occupants, completing the operation at about 3.22am.
The injured passenger and pedestrian were given initial medical treatment by Health Ministry personnel before being transported by ambulance to Seberang Jaya Hospital. However, BMW driver Muhammad Faizwan Noor Salihi, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His remains were subsequently handed over to the police for further action. The Myvi and Persona were reportedly stationary on the road shoulder, although their respective drivers were not present at the scene.
A total of 11 firefighters and two vehicles were involved in the rescue operation, which concluded at 4.11am after the area was checked and deemed free of further hazards. Police and Health Ministry personnel also assisted during the operation.
