An 18-year-old student from Bukit Beruang Community College died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a private ambulance at a traffic light junction in Kampung Air Merbau, Jasin, on Wednesday morning.
The victim, Muhammad Amirul Asyraaf Md Azizan, sustained serious injuries to his head, hands and legs in the crash, which occurred at around 9.35am.
Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said the victim was rushed to Jasin Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at around 10.30am while receiving medical attention.
According to him, the motorcycle was travelling from Jasin towards Bemban, while the ambulance was heading from Air Merbau towards Jasin Hospital when the collision occurred.
“Initial investigations found that both vehicles collided in the middle of the road at the signalised three-way junction.
“Police also found that the ambulance driver was believed to have entered the junction while the traffic light was red,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The 41-year-old ambulance driver suffered a broken arm in the accident. Meanwhile, two passengers inside the ambulance, aged 24 and 81, escaped with no serious injuries.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with police continuing to gather evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
The victim’s body was taken to the Forensic Unit at Jasin Hospital, where a post-mortem examination was carried out to determine the cause of death.
Police have also obtained dashcam footage from a vehicle travelling behind the ambulance, which is expected to assist investigators in establishing how the collision happened.
