Viral Indonesian Teacher Payslip Shows Just RM111 Salary, Sparks Online Debate

Date:

A salary slip allegedly belonging to an Indonesian teacher has gone viral on social media, attracting attention from Malaysians and sparking fresh discussion about the welfare of educators in the neighbouring country.

The document, which was highlighted by the Verifirst news page on Instagram, reportedly showed the teacher receiving just 490,000 rupiah (around RM111) for June 2026. The unusually low figure quickly prompted questions among social media users about the financial situation faced by teachers, particularly those who are not classified as Aparatur Sipil Negara (ASN), or civil servants.

The amount shown on the viral payslip has fuelled debate over the income and working conditions of non-government teachers in Indonesia. Many social media users expressed concern over whether such earnings could adequately support educators carrying out their responsibilities in schools.

However, the authenticity of the document has yet to be independently verified. The identity of the teacher, the school involved and the exact location where the alleged payslip originated also remain unclear.

As a result, the reported 490,000 rupiah payment should not be treated as representative of the average salary earned by teachers across Indonesia. Pay can vary depending on employment status, location, institution and other factors.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the document, its rapid spread online has once again placed teacher welfare under the spotlight. Discussions over educators’ salaries and employment conditions remain a sensitive issue in Indonesia, particularly for teachers working outside the formal civil service system.

The controversy also demonstrates how a single document shared online can quickly trigger wider public discussion, even when key details have yet to be confirmed. Until the payslip and its circumstances are verified, the figure should be viewed as an unconfirmed case rather than a reflection of the broader Indonesian teaching profession.
