Two friends were brought before the Magistrate’s Court here today and charged with murdering an Indonesian man about three weeks ago.
Muhd Asnawi Ghazali, 37, and Musa Ramli, 25, nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate Siti Zubaidah Mahat.
However, no plea was recorded from either accused as the alleged offence falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, the two men, together with another man still at large known as Kutek, allegedly murdered 47-year-old Suherman at an unnumbered house in Kampung Baru Telok Gong at about 6.30am on August 6.
Both accused were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years upon conviction.
If the death penalty is not imposed, the accused may also be sentenced to at least 12 strokes of whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Uzzair Rosman appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were unrepresented.
The court denied bail and fixed November 27 for the next mention of the case.
It is understood that the alleged killing was carried out by pouring petrol over the victim before setting him on fire.
The case remains at the charge stage, and the allegations against both men have yet to be proven in court.
