Factory Owner Burnt While Attempting To Extinguish Fire At Penang Fabric Factory

Date:

A factory owner was injured after attempting to put out a fire that broke out at his fabric processing premises on Friday night.

The 58-year-old victim, identified as H’ng Seng Peng, reportedly suffered first-degree burns to his neck and hands.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations and Rescue Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at about 6.09pm and mobilised personnel from the Butterworth Fire and Rescue Station.

Firefighters from Penanti, Kepala Batas, Jalan Perak, Bandar Perda, Bertam and Perai stations were also deployed to assist with the operation.

“The fire involved a semi-permanent factory (Class B) that processes fabric for sofa manufacturing, with about 80 per cent of the premises estimated to have been damaged.

“The fire also affected two motorcycles, with about 50 per cent damage, as well as a three-tonne lorry and a forklift, both of which sustained about 90 per cent damage,” he said.

The blaze was brought under control at about 6.28pm, while the injured factory owner received initial treatment at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further medical attention.

Firefighters continued efforts to completely extinguish the blaze, which was declared fully extinguished at about 4.35am today.

An overhaul operation was subsequently carried out to ensure there were no remaining hazards or hidden sources of fire.

The operation was officially concluded at 6.59am, after which the scene was handed over to the Fire Investigation Unit (FIO) for further investigation.
