A 23-year-old man has died after allegedly being abducted, held captive and assaulted for several hours in Zhushan Township, Nantou, Taiwan, before he was reportedly abandoned at a hospital in critical condition.
The victim, identified as surnamed Chuang, was allegedly taken away from an area near a local Tudigong temple at around 10pm on August 28. Investigators believe he was forced into a vehicle and taken to a tea shop, where he was allegedly attacked by several people throughout the night.
By around 5am the following morning, Chuang was reportedly left outside Zhushan Show Chwan Hospital in a critical condition. Despite emergency treatment by medical staff, his injuries were too severe and he later died.
Police and prosecutors subsequently formed a special task force to investigate the case. Authorities are examining possible offences including disturbing public order, unlawful confinement and causing death through assault.
Five people, including a man surnamed Liu, have so far been detained in connection with the case. Three suspects have been ordered to remain in custody without visitation, while two of those involved are juveniles who have been placed in a detention facility. Another suspect, surnamed Tseng, was released on NT$500,000 bail.
The case has attracted additional attention after Nantou County Council Speaker Ho Sheng-feng confirmed that the deceased was his nephew — specifically, the son of his younger sister-in-law. The revelation has raised questions because the incident happened shortly before Taiwan’s local election period.
Ho, however, denied that the incident was connected to the election. He said the suspects were young people from Zhushan whom he did not personally know.
He also said he did not regularly speak with his nephew and was therefore unfamiliar with his social circle and daily activities. Based on what he had learnt so far, Ho said the confrontation may have stemmed from a misunderstanding involving damage to a vehicle belonging to the tea shop owner.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, including whether anything beyond the reported vehicle dispute was involved, remain under investigation. Authorities are expected to continue questioning the suspects and gathering evidence to establish exactly what happened before the victim’s death.
