A Malaysian woman who moved from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore for love has sparked an online debate after sharing her frustrations over her boyfriend’s decision to travel overseas with his mother instead of prioritising time with her.
The woman, who has been working in Singapore for more than six months, explained that she initially made the move to give her relationship with her Singaporean boyfriend a chance after a year of long-distance dating.
Her boyfriend is an only child whose father passed away while he was serving in the military. Understanding his family circumstances, she decided to rent a place of her own rather than move into his home, although his mother had said she could stay with them.
Despite living separately, she visits her boyfriend’s home for dinner every evening, with him usually arranging takeaway food or preparing a simple meal.
However, tensions began to build around Chinese New Year, when the couple had different expectations about spending time together.
Boyfriend Cut KL Visit Short, Then Travelled With Mother
The woman said they had originally planned for her boyfriend to accompany her to Kuala Lumpur during Chinese New Year and return to Singapore together.
However, he stayed for only about three days, partly because his mother had suffered a minor fracture in her foot after a fall.
The woman said she had even offered to let him stay behind to look after his mother, as she understood that parents also wanted their children around during festive celebrations.
Her boyfriend eventually decided to accompany her, saying he was concerned that her family might wonder why he had never visited Kuala Lumpur with her since she moved to Singapore.
However, the short visit left her feeling disappointed, particularly because he and his mother subsequently went ahead with a planned trip to Taiwan the following week.
She said she understood that the trip had been arranged earlier and did not feel she had the right to stop them from going.
Nevertheless, she struggled with the thought that her boyfriend could see his mother every day, while she had to take annual leave, pay for long-distance bus tickets and arrange transport whenever she wanted to visit her own parents.
The situation became more difficult when she fell ill while alone in Singapore during their trip.
She said she had to visit a doctor, buy medicine and manage everything herself, contrasting the experience with her life in Kuala Lumpur, where her parents would help care for her when she was sick.
Although she acknowledged that she was an adult who needed to be independent, she admitted that the experience made her miss home even more.
New Argument Over Another Planned Trip
The woman’s frustration resurfaced when her boyfriend recently told her he wanted to travel overseas with his mother again at the end of the year.
When she explained her feelings, he reportedly said he wanted to cherish the opportunity to travel with his ageing mother while she was still able to do so.
He reportedly asked what would happen if his mother suddenly became unable to walk or travel.
The woman said she understood the importance of caring for elderly parents but questioned why her own family and emotional needs seemed to receive less consideration.
She also pointed out that her boyfriend’s mother had other relatives living nearby who could spend time with her.
The disagreement subsequently shifted towards money, with her boyfriend suggesting they compare how much he had spent on her against how much he had spent on his mother.
According to the woman, he cited gifts such as blind boxes and perfume, as well as paying for meals and occasionally taking her to restaurants in shopping malls.
However, she argued that most of their meals were still at hawker centres or food courts, with mall restaurants visited only occasionally.
She stressed that she had never expected him to pay for her entire lifestyle or take her to expensive restaurants, as she had her own job and could afford to support herself.
She also said she had never asked him to buy her luxury handbags, despite his accompanying her to boutiques when she purchased them with her own money.
For her, the issue was not how much he spent, but whether he made an effort to plan dates and show consideration for her within his means.
She also questioned why her own contributions, including the gifts she bought for him, appeared to be overlooked when he brought up his spending.
‘I Just Want To Feel Valued’
The woman emphasised that she was not asking her boyfriend to stop being filial or give up spending time with his mother.
Instead, she wanted him to understand the difficulties of leaving her hometown, family and familiar lifestyle to build a life in Singapore for their relationship.
She said she had hoped that moving closer would allow them to spend more time together and work towards a future as a couple.
While acknowledging that she needed to maintain her independence, she questioned whether expecting more companionship and consideration from her boyfriend was unreasonable.
Her account drew mixed reactions online, with some criticising her expectations while others could sympathise with the challenges of relocating for a relationship.
One commenter wrote that the boyfriend appeared to be a good partner who was simply being filial, suggesting that the woman could reconsider the relationship if she was unhappy with the arrangement.
Another questioned whether she was upset because her boyfriend was taking his mother on holiday instead of taking her, suggesting that she could also travel with her own mother.
The debate has since raised questions about balancing family obligations with romantic relationships, particularly when one partner makes significant sacrifices to live closer to the other.
