Former French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur, a prominent centre-right politician who served as the country’s premier from 1993 to 1995, has died at the age of 97.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed Balladur’s death in a post on X on Monday, describing him as an important figure who was closely linked to decades of France’s political history.
Balladur played a key role in France’s economic reforms during his time in office, most notably overseeing an extensive privatisation programme. The initiative resulted in the sale of several major French companies, including banks Société Générale and Paribas, which later became part of BNP Paribas, as well as broadcaster TF1.
He also introduced a major reform of France’s pension system in 1993, tackling an issue that has remained politically sensitive in the country for decades.
Lecornu said Balladur had been a major figure in public life, from his early career working alongside former president Georges Pompidou to his eventual appointment as prime minister.
He described Balladur as a statesman with a reformist outlook whose political legacy would continue to serve as an example to members of France’s centre-right political camp.
Despite his influence, Balladur was frequently criticised for his reserved and technocratic personality. His critics often portrayed him as distant from ordinary people, with satirical newspaper Le Canard enchaîné even giving him the nickname “His Courteous Smugness”.
Press cartoonist Plantu also famously depicted Balladur as an aristocrat wearing a wig and being carried in a sedan chair, reflecting the public perception of his detached political style.
Balladur served as prime minister under Socialist President Francois Mitterrand, leading the French government during a period of significant economic and political reform.
