A bus driver who was caught on video driving erratically on the North-South Expressway (Plus) crashed into a highway divider after reportedly becoming drowsy from the effects of heart medication.
Tapah district police chief Abdul Malik Hasim said the accident occurred at about 12.30pm today at KM328.3 of the Plus expressway, along the Bidor-Tapah stretch heading north.
Police were alerted after footage showing the bus swerving and being driven erratically was shared on social media. The vehicle was travelling from Kajang, Selangor, to Kulim, Kedah, and was not carrying any passengers at the time.
Abdul Malik said initial investigations found the bus was travelling in the right lane when the driver is believed to have lost control before crashing into and mounting the road divider.
The driver escaped injury but was taken to Tapah Hospital for treatment. A doctor at the hospital’s emergency department later confirmed that he had been drowsy due to the effects of medication prescribed for his heart condition.
Further checks found that the driver was receiving outpatient treatment at Kuala Ketil Health Clinic in Kedah.
The bus sustained damage to its front section and undercarriage after becoming lodged on the highway divider. No passengers were involved in the crash.
Police are investigating the incident under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
